Preface

This article was written by Fuengsin Trafford (nee Sarayutpitag) as a contribution to the memorial book for her Dhamma teacher, Mr. Gaew Potikanok (นายแก้ว โพธิกนก), for the occasion of his cremation on 8 May 1986. In her heartfelt tribute, she indicates how great a Dhamma teacher he was, a constant source of support for her as she disseminated the Buddha's teachings in the '70s and '80s in the Birmingham area (UK).

Presented here are a translation into English followed by the original Thai for which many thanks to Ek-anong Tangrukwaraskul, who has copy typed the entire book. Note that the translation has depended on the use of electronic tools and as such no guarantee is made to its accuracy, so it should be considered a draft version. However, this version does include amendments kindly suggested by Asst. Prof. Dr. Pornapit Darasawang and Khun Mananya Pattamsoontorn, so the resulting text should be reasonably correct, albeit a fairly literal rendering. The translator apologises for any errors that remain - suggestions for improvements are welcome.

In Memoriam

(From the Cremation book of Ajahn Gaew Potikanok [1986])

I got to meet and study Vijja Dhammakaya with Ajahn Gaew when Ajahn was an instructor in the compound of Wat Paknam. Afterwards I received a scholarship from UNESCO and went to further my studies in England, completing them successfully after 1 year. I then made the return journey to Thailand, throughout this period being separated from the Englishman I had married. Whilst in Thailand, Ajahn kindly gave me further teachings on Vijja Dhammakaya. Before I returned to England, Ajahn made a prediction that in future I was to go and spread the Buddha's teachings in England; and Ajahn brought me to prostrate myself in front of Luang Phor [Wat Paknam] in order to ask that he give his blessing to help me succeed in this mission. I honestly didn't believe Ajahn at that time, but did not dare tell him. For I thought myself unable to succeed in doing such important work since my knowledge of the Buddha's teachings and my practice were insufficient. And moreover, my English language skills were still too weak to understand any Dhamma books in English. Furthermore, England was also a country with belief in Christianity.

After I returned to settle in England, I tried to practise meditation as I had been taught by Ajahn. I read books in both Thai and English, and applied to become a member of a Buddhist society where the majority of people were English. Then after 15 years, the prophecy of Ajahn suddenly became true. One day I applied to become a school teacher at a Buddhist Sunday school. I also became editor of the magazine, "CHILDREN & DHARMA". Afterwards DR. REWATA DHARMA, the Abbot of the Birmingham Wat, invited me to come and help teach beginner's Vipassana meditation to westerners every Monday. Meanwhile I was also invited to go and give talks on Buddhism by various associations, schools, religious youth groups, colleges, universities, and prisons, etc. In 2527 B.E. DR. MARY HALL, Director of the Multi Faith Resource Unit, where there was teaching on 6 world religions, invited me to come and teach Buddhism there. Last year I was again invited when the majority of students had already completed degrees in various subjects. I was teaching more and more and got to accompany a team from this organization that taught at another college every Friday.

I was very recently appointed by the UK Ministry of Interior (HOME OFFICE) as a chaplain to go into prisons and teach Buddhist prisoners. From encountering these situations, I was able to see that Ajahn had a very powerful mind and was really able to predict things that will occur in the future. Whenever I went to give a talk, when it came to giving instruction, I tried to spread the honour of Ajahn on a regular basis by making the British and people from other countries understand. Every time I had a problem regarding the practice or teaching here, Ajahn helped solve the problem with suggestions and always encouraged me by getting Darunee to write letters on his behalf. Furthermore he still continued to help my mother and my family after I left.

The departure of Ajahn has brought such sadness and grief to me that I am unable to find the words to express it. The loving-kindness, compassion and interest he showed in every one of his pupils, his mental attainment in the knowledge of Vijja Dhammakaya and also his methods of instruction will impress me forever. He was an exemplary lay person who, even though they may have very many responsibilities, yet still they devote time to performing Dhamma and can perform it well and are able to instruct their disciples. It gives me moral support to follow his observance of Dhamma. I think that I myself will have the opportunity to return Ajahn's kindness by maintaining moral virtue, developing concentration and mental cultivation as he kindly taught me. I will also try to disseminate Buddhism in Britain and then the continent of Europe in accordance with his intentions.

คำไว้อาลัย

(อนุสรณ์ งาน พระ ราช ทาน เพลิง ศพ นายแก้ว โพธิกนก [พ.ศ.2529])

ข้าพเจ้าได้พบและศึกษาวิชาธรรมกายกับอาจารย์แก้วในระยะ ที่ท่านสอนอยู่ในบริเวณวัดปากน้ำ  ต่อมา UNESCO ได้ให้ทุนข้าพเจ้า  ไปศึกษาต่อที่ประเทศอังกฤษ เป็นเวลา 1 ปี  เมื่อเรียนสำเร็จแล้ว ข้าพเจ้าก็เดินทางกลับมาอยู่เมืองไทยชั่วคราวหลังจากแต่งงานกับชาวอังกฤษ ขณะที่อยู่เมืองไทยนั้นอาจารย์ได้กรุณาสอนวิชาธรรมกายให้ ข้าพเจ้าต่อ  ก่อนจะกลับอังกฤษได้ทำนายว่าอนาคตข้าพเจ้าจะต้อง ไปเผยแพร่ศาสนาพุทธที่อังกฤษและพาข้าพเจ้าไปกราบหลวงพ่อ เพื่อ ขอพรท่านให้ช่วยในการทำงานครั้งนี้ให้สำเร็จ  ใจจริงของข้าพเจ้านั้นไม่เชื่ออาจารย์เลยแต่ไม่กล้าบอกท่าน    เพราะคิดว่าตนเองไม่สามารถ ทำงานสำคัญเช่นนั้นให้สำเร็จได้   ความรู้ทางศาสนาและการปฏิบัติก็ ไม่เพียงพอ  นอกจากนั้นแล้วภาษาอังกฤษยังอ่อนมากไม่เข้าใจหนังสือ ธรรมะภาษาอังกฤษเลย   อีกทั้งอังกฤษเป็นประเทศนับถือศาสนาคริสต์ ด้วย

หลังจากที่ข้าพเจ้ากลับไปตั้งรกรากอยู่ที่ประเทศอังกฤษแล้วข้าพเจ้าพยายามฝึกสมาธิตามที่อาจารย์สอนให้   อ่านหนังสือทั้งภาษาไทยและอังกฤษและสมัครเป็นสมาชิกพุทธสมาคมซึ่งมีชาวอังกฤษเป็นส่วนใหญ่ 15   ปีให้หลัง   คำทำนายของอาจารย์ก็เป็นจริงขึ้นมาทันที  วันหนึ่งข้าพเจ้าสมัครเป็นครูสอนเด็กที่โรงเรียนพุทธศาสนาวัน อาทิตย์ และเป็นบรรณาธิการนิตยสาร “CHILDREN &  DHARMA” ด้วย ต่อมา DR. REWATA DHARMA เจ้าอาวาสวัด BIRMINGHAM เชิญให้ข้าพเจ้าไปช่วยสอนฝรั่งที่เริ่มเรียนสมาธิ วิปัสสนาทุก  ๆ   วันจันทร์  ในขณะเดียวกันก็ได้รับเชิญ ไปพูดเกี่ยวกับ พุทธศาสนาตามสมาคมต่าง   ๆ,   โรงเรียน,  กลุ่มศาสนาเยาวชน , วิทยาลัย,   มหาวิทยาลัย,  เรือนจำ ฯลฯ เมื่อ พ.ศ.2527  DR. MARY HALL  ผู้อำนวยการ  MULTI FAITHS RESOURCE UNIT ซึ่งมีการสอนศาสนาถึง 6 ศาสนา ได้เชิญข้าพเจ้าไปสอนศาสนาพุทธที่นั้น เมื่อปีที่แล้วก็ได้รับเชิญอีก   นักศึกษาส่วนใหญ่จบปริญญาด้าน ต่าง  ๆ มาแล้ว ขณะที่ข้าพเจ้าได้สอนเพิ่มเติมขึ้นและยังติดตามทีม ขององค์การนี้ไปสอนที่วิทยาลัยอื่นทุก   ๆ วันศุกร์

เมื่อเร็ว ๆ นี้ทางกระทรวงมหาดไทย (HOME OFFICE) ของอังกฤษได้ตั้งให้ข้าพเจ้าเป็นอนุศาสนาจารย์เพื่อเข้าไปสอนนักโทษ ที่นับถือศาสนาพุทธตามเรือนจำด้วย   จากประสบการณ์เหล่านี้จะเห็นได้ว่าอาจารย์มีจิตตานุภาพสูงสามารถทำนายสิ่งที่จะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคตได้  ทุกครั้งที่ข้าพเจ้าไปพูดเมื่อสอนข้าพเจ้าได้พยายามเผยแพร่ เกียรติคุณของอาจารย์ให้ชาวอังกฤษและชาติอื่น ๆ ทราบอยู่เป็นประจำ ทุกครั้งที่ข้าพเจ้ามีปัญหาเกี่ยวกับการปฏิบัติธรรม  หรือการสอน ที่นี่ อาจารย์ได้ช่วยเหลือแก้ปัญหาให้คำแนะนำ    และให้กำลังใจข้าพเจ้าอยู่เสมอโดยให้ดรุณีเป็นผู้เขียนแทน    นอกจากนั้นแล้วท่านยังช่วยเหลือคุณแม่และครอบครัวของข้าพเจ้าอยู่ตลอดมา

การจากไปของอาจารย์ได้นำความเศร้าสลดมาสู่ข้าพเจ้าอย่าง ไม่สามารถจะบรรยายได้    ความเมตตากรุณา      ความสนใจในศิษย์ทุก ๆ คน จิตตานุภาพความรู้ในวิชาธรรมกาย    ตลอดจนวิธีการสอนของท่านจะประทับใจของข้าพเจ้าตลอดไป  ท่านเป็นตัวอย่างแก่ฆราวาส ผู้ครองเรือนทั้งหลาย แม้จะมีภาระมากแต่ก็ยังเสียสละเวลาปฏิบัติ ธรรมและปฏิบัติได้อย่างยอดเยี่ยมและสามารถสอนลูกศิษย์  ทำให้ ข้าพเจ้ามีกำลังใจในการปฏิบัติตามท่าน    ข้าพเจ้าคิดว่าตนเองจะมี โอกาสทดแทนพระคุณของท่านโดยการรักษาศีล    ทำสมาธิและภาวนา ตามที่ท่านได้กรุณาสั่งสอน    พร้อมทั้งพยายามเผยแพร่พุทธศาสนา ในอังกฤษและภาคพื้นยุโรปต่อไปตามความประสงค์ของท่าน
